Amherst Teachers Association Political Action Committee

The Amherst Teachers Association was formed in September of 2021 to give political voice to the Amherst Teachers Association in local issues that directly impact the members of our association.  ATAPAC allows the Amherst Teachers Association to communicate our political perspectives to an audience beyond just our own membership.  ATAPAC is registered with the Lorain County Board of Elections and the Ohio Secretary of State.

Electoral History:

  • November 7, 2023 – ATAPAC reformed the Screening Committee from 2021 and sent invitations out to the two incumbent members of the school board who were up for reelection, Rex Engle and Marc Zappa, and write-in candidate Ron Hause.  Mr. Zappa declined to respond to our survey questions and our invitation to interview.  Mr. Engle was unavailable for vacation on the original interview date, but was afforded the opportunity to respond to the survey and to schedule an alternative date to interview, but chose not to respond. Using the same panel of questions from our 2021 process, the Screening Committee unanimously chose to endorse Mr. Ron Hause for the November 7th, 2023 election.
  • April 13, 2022 – ATAPAC endorsed the passage of Issue 1 and Issue 2, renewal tax levies put on by the Amherst Exempted Village School District.  Both issues were adopted by the people of Amherst in May of 2022.
  • October 19, 2021 – ATAPAC endorsed Dr. Amanda Messer and Mrs. Morgan Wachholz for Amherst Exempted Village School Board.  During this process, ATAPAC formed a Screening Committee made up of teachers from throughout the district and representing various perspectives.  The Committee invited all candidates to participate in a question and answer session to understand their perspectives on various educational issues in Amherst.  After the interviews, the committee unanimously voted to endorse Dr. Messer and Mrs. Wachholz, who were both elected to the school board in November of 2021.
